Women's Golf Takes Fourth At UNLV

March 11, 2009

BOULDER CREEK, Nevada -- Anya Alvarez shot a 5-under 67 to jump four spots up the leader board into third place, as the Husky women finished fourth as a team at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational on Wednesday.

'None of us are surprised at how well we played yesterday and today,' said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'We're good -- and I don't mean that in a cocky way. These girls are starting to realize how good they really are.'

The Huskies opened the tournament in 12th place after shooting a 325, a score they bettered by 37 strokes (288) the next day. The Huskies finished with a collective team score of 895. Tournament winner was UNLV at 884 and medalist honors were split between Georgia's Mallory Hetzel and Marta Silva at 214.

'We obviously played better the last two days and conditions had to do with that,' Mulflur said of the near 35 mile an hour winds that hurt all teams' scores. 'But it is also that they are starting to get a little more confidence. This is exactly how we played at the end of the fall and we're excited about that.'

Alvarez, who finished fourth in the Las Vegas Shootout at Boulder Creek Golf Club during the fall, had two scores in the 60s this week en route to another top Huskies finish this season.

'She just really likes playing down here,' Mulflur said. 'And this course is perfectly set up for a golfer with her length off the tee.'

No Husky team player finished below 40th in the 96-golfer field. Alvarez was followed by Huskies Karinn Dickinson (T20th, +8), Christina Yoon (T32nd, +12), Molly Aronsson (T40th, +14) and Sadena Parks (T40th, +14).Mulflur was also impressed with freshman Sadena Parks.

'I was really pleased to see Sadena play so well in just her second tournament,' she said. 'And I know she is ready to go back out there and play even better next tournament.'

The Huskies also brought three individuals to Nevada in Nicole Ferrero (T76, +25), Katie Saucier (T85, +28) and Darcie Richmond (T87, +29). The University of Washington will continue regular season play at the BYU Dixie Classic, March 24-25 at the Entrada Canyon Golf Course.
