March 12, 2009

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 10 USC women's tennis team surrendered only one doubles match to No. 60 William and Mary on Thursday afternoon at Marks Stadium on the way to a 7-0 sweep of the Tribe. USC nabbed the doubles point to take an early lead before pounding out a string of singles wins, with the match-clincher coming from Leyla Entekhabi at the No. 5 position. USC improves to 11-2 overall with today's win.

The Women of Troy followed up a smooth and decisive 8-0 win by #71 Maria Sanchez / Alison Ramos at the No. 3 doubles position with a couple tight ones in the remaining doubles matches. After Ramos/Sanchez cleaned up against Morrissey/Zidek, #62 Sarah Fansler / Lyndsay Kinstler battled back from a 5-6 deficit to win the last three games and pin up an 8-6 victory over Kasztelaniec/Pop at No. 2 and secure the doubles point for USC. Fansler/Kinstler broke their Tribe opponents twice in the final three games to get the win and the point. Still going at the No. 1 slot were #12 Amanda Fink / Gabriela Niculescu, who saw Acharya/Zoricic battle back from a 3-0 USC lead to force a tiebreaker. There, the Tribe managed to work back out ahead and take the match 8-7 (5) to bring up singles play.

From the No. 6 position, Lyndsay Kinstler secured the first singles win of the day with a strong 6-1, 6-1 win over Maria Morrissey. Moments later, Amanda Fink finished off Ragini Acharya 6-3, 6-4 from her No. 2 slot, sending USC ahead 3-0 in the match. Leyla Entekhabi served up the deciding win for the Trojans next, taking down Barbara Zidek 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. Next up on the winning action was freshman Alison Ramos, who pinned up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Carmen Pop with a strong service game to finish out the match and take USC ahead 5-0.

At No. 3, Gabriela Niculescu was doing battle with some long games against Klaudyna Kasztelaniec before getting a late break and then holding serve for a 6-3, 6-2 win. That left Sarah Fansler up against Katarina Zoricic at No. 1. Fansler outlasted a second-set push from her Tribe opponent and dominated the tiebreaker to notch a 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory and wrap things up on the day for the Trojans.

USC's next competition takes the Trojans to Malibu for a Wednesday (March 18) match at Pepperdine, set for 1:30 p.m.
