March 12, 2009
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 13 USC men's tennis team saw freshman Matt Kecki clinch a tight match with visiting No. 30 Texas Tech by beating out his Red Raider opponent in a three-set battle. Kecki's win put the Trojans ahead 4-3 for the match, improving USC's overall mark to 11-3.
Texas Tech got the early advantage by pulling off a pair of doubles wins to start things off. At No. 1, Red Raiders #10 Rojman/Carvalho managed an 8-5 upset of USC's #4 Farah/Johnson. With two doubles matches still going tightly, Texas Tech pair Breler/Markovic fought ahead and took an 8-6 win over Kecki Polmda at No. 2 to secure the doubles point for the Red Raiders just before USC's Magdas/Nguyen tacked up an 8-5 victory at No. 3 over Escobar/Gonzalez.
Robert Farah turned the tide after the doubles slip with a resounding win at No. 1 singles. The nation's #1, Farah pinned up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Texas Tech's #45 Raony Carvalho to make it a 1-1 match. At No. 4, #57 Abdullah Magdas pulled the Trojans into the lead with a powerful tiebreak win in the second set to claim a 6-4, 7-6 (1) win over Christian Rojmar, bringing USC to a 2-1 lead in the match. #86 Steve Johnson padded the Trojans' lead to 3-1 with his 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Gonzalo Escobar, but there were battles still raging at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 slots to leave the match up in the air.
At No. 2, #102 Jaak Poldma was topped by Texas Tech's Sinisa Markovic 6-4, 6-3 to pull the Red Raiders to 3-2. Meanwhile, at No, 6, USC's Jason McNaughton was working his way into a second-set tiebreak with hopes of pushing to a third set, but Milos Kustudija worked ahead after a 4-4 tie in the tiebreak and claimed the match 6-2, 7-6 (5), tying the whole thing up 3-3. That left the deciding match at No. 5, where freshman Matt Kecki rebounded from dropping the second set to take a lead and hold it through to the end, breaking Michael Breler one last time to claim the win and clinch the match with his 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 decision.
USC's next competition comes next week with a Monday (March 16) match against No. 29 Tulsa at 12 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
