Tennis Begins Big 12 play, Hosts OU Friday

BOULDER - The University of Colorado tennis team will open Big 12 Conference play this Friday, March 13 against the Oklahoma Sooners at the Millennium Harvest House Bubble. First serve begins at 2 p.m. with the doubles competition followed by singles play.

Admission and parking are free.

The Buffaloes (4-5) have lost three straight, all against ranked opponents, while the Sooners have won three straight. The Sooners lead the all-time series, 18-14, however the Buffaloes have the last four in a row, and five of the last six, including three straight in Boulder.

On Sunday, CU continues its homestand taking on No. 73 Oklahoma State, Sunday at 11 a.m. At press time it is undetermined if the match will be held at the Harvest House or outside at the South Campus Courts.

At every home match throughout the home spring season, the CU sports information office will feature a student-athlete Q&A. Friday's feature is freshman Allison Wahba. Wahba is from Manhattan Beach, Calif. and is a marketing major.

school record holder... Senior Franziska Jendrian is currently atop the school's all-time doubles list. With 70 career victories, Jendrian has tallied 45 wins in the spring and 25 during fall play. She broke the school mark previously held by Jessica Garrow (1997-2000) with 69 career doubles victories.

 

SPRING TRIUMPHS... Sophomore Abbie Probert and senior Franziska Jendrian each have five spring victories, while junior Camila Belassi and freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen have four apiece.

 

OVERALL WINS... Franziska Jendrian tops the team with 19 victories for the year (79 career). Junior Melisa Esposito (54 career) and Camila Belassi (48 career) have recorded 15 and 14 wins, respectively.

 

OUT FOR THE SEASON... Senior Monica Milewski will miss the 2009 spring season with an injury and will be redshirted. Milewski, a two-time Big 12 singles selection has 65 career victories.

 

DOUBLES POINT... The Buffaloes have won the doubles point four times this spring helping CU to three team wins after securing the doubles point.

 

OU Match Notes

- Oklahoma earned its first national ranking since April 21, 2006 on Tuesday (ranked No. 64).

- OU defeated No. 32 Tulsa (its highest ranked opponent of the season), 4-3, on March 4.

- The win against Tulsa was the biggest upset in the past three years of the program.

- OU has played five of eleven matches against ranked opponents.

- Sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu holds a team-best 8-1 singles record, including a seven-match win streak (Feb. 1-Mar. 1).

- Freshman Marie-Pier Huet holds a 8-3 record in singles and clinched the win against Tulsa for the Sooners on March 4 .

- The Sooners have played eight of their 11 matches on the road.

- This is head coach David Mullins first season with the Sooners. Mullins came to Oklahoma from Northwestern where he was named 2008 ITA Assistant Coach of the Year and helped lead the Wildcats to three-straight Big Ten Championships.
