2009 State Farm Pac-10 Tournament: Game Six Quotes

March 13, 2009

UCLA Coach Nikki Caldwell

On tonight’s performance

“I thought the first half we struggled offensively obviously, but we came back and regrouped.  This is a team that plays defense.”

On the differences between the first half and the second

“In the first half, I thought we were missing the open players.  We were taking contested jumpers and we just didn’t play together.  In the second half we did.”

On UCLA’s chance of making it to the NCAA Tournament

“I think this team is a team that has shown that on any given day we can compete and compete against the best in the country.”

“We can only control or try to influence our opportunities to continue to win and that is what we will try to do.”

UCLA forward Antonye Nyingifa

On finding their rhythm in the second half

“In the second half, I think we just played more as a team and the ball was just really flowing for us and we got better shots and open looks.”

UCLA guard Doreena Campbell

On matching up with Stanford

“As for Stanford, we have to come out defensively in the first half.  We have to start out in the first half, play good defense and play as a team and give it all we’ve got.”

On progress over the length of the season

“We just really would like to get a bid.  We are working as hard as we can.”

Oregon State Coach LaVonda Wagner

On the season and the keys to tonight’s game

“I think we played very well in the Pac-10. Unfortunately, we didn’t come up on the winning side tonight. We lost this game on the rebounding and also, we put them at the free-throw line way too much in the second half and got in some foul trouble.”

On UCLA’s game-changing run

“Midway through the second half we were up eight and they went on a run and tied the game. I think a lot of that came down to their offensive rebounding. They were getting second and third and fourth looks at the basket. You’re not going to beat a basketball team when you give up 22 offensive rebounds.”

On her team’s postseason prospects

“Well, we’re 19-11, which is a very good record and one of the best records we’ve had at Oregon State in a long time. I am assuming that we will get a WNIT bid.”

Oregon State guard Brittney Davis

On how the game turned

“I think they were a lot more aggressive in that time and we tried to make stops, but then we had some key turnovers. So, they went on their run because we turned over the ball and we didn’t take care of it.”
