2009 State Farm Pac-10 Tournament: Game Three Quotes

March 13, 2009

USC Coach Mark Trakh

On the execution of the teams

“I thought it was a really well-played game. I think both teams did a nice job. I was really happy with the way we played the last four minutes. Heather Oliver hit some big threes and Camille [LeNoir] really played the way she’s capable of, and the way she’s played all year.”

On the keys to the game

“The big thing was rebounding and handling their pressure and Camille [Lenoir] had 18 points, eight assists and zero turnovers against Arizona State’s pressure, and Arizona State pressures the heck out of you. She proved today that she’s one of the top point guards in the Pac-10 and one of the top point guards in the country.”

On winning a close game

“We’ve had a lot of tough breaks, against Duke, against Cal twice. It’s up to us. We didn’t hit the shot or the free throw and (today) down the stretch we made the big shots, we made the free throws, we made the big stops. They’re a heck of a team and it was a great win for our kids.”

On tomorrow’s game

“We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s game. I think we’re on a high right now and we’re ready to play. As far as rest goes, I think we could take the court right now and play again.”

USC guard Camille LeNoir

On the emotions of playing as the visiting team at her home arena

“It was a little different. We were the away team. We sat on a different bench and came out of a different locker room. We just knew that we had to come out and play our hearts out. This could have been our last game. Arizona State’s already in the tournament. I think we had that in our minds, because it’s either go hard or go home.”

On her game-sealing layup in the final minute

“We were going to run a pick-and-roll and I could tell Briann January was a little tired and I just attacked. I had to take advantage when she was tired, because she’s a great defender.”

USC guard Heather Oliver

On making five three-pointers

“The coaches have been on me about my confidence and getting the ball and just shooting it, so I was like ‘What the heck? This could be our last game, so just shoot the ball,’ and it went in.”

On playing through cramps in her calves

“It’s just something that randomly popped up. I don’t know why, but you can’t really sit on the bench with something as little as that.”

Arizona State Coach Charli Turner Thorne

“USC did a great job hitting their shots, so credit to them.  But bottom line is we didn’t play like ourselves today and we didn’t play our defense.”

On the loss of Dymond

“This was our first full game without her and we didn’t do a great job, but I am confident that we can get back in the gym and make a few adjustments.“

On playing in March

“In March it is about toughness and it’s about defense and rebounding.  I don’t think we played quite as tough or quite as good of team defense as we can.  I think we can come back next week and do a lot better job at that.”

Arizona State Player Briann January

On the poor shooting in first half

“We definitely did miss some bunnies, some of the easy shots that usually fall for us.  Game in and game out, you are going to go through cold spells of shooting.  You just have to shoot through it.”

On wearing Dymond’s jersey

“It was a team decision.  She’s a big part of this team, so we wanted to show her how much we care for her.”

Arizona State Player Lauren Lacey

On difficult loss

“We have a lot of work that we need to accomplish when we start practice back up.  We are not guaranteed anything.  We have one game left at that, if we continue to play the way we are playing.”
