Cal Finishes Second at Quad Meet in Sacramento

March 13, 2009

The California Golden Bears, competing in their final warm-up before the Pac-10 Championships, finished second in the quad meet hosted by Sacramento State Friday night in Sacramento. The Bears earned a pair of 'W's', with their team total of 191.975 edging UC Davis (191.800) and Seattle Pacific (187.225). Sacramento State won the meet with a 194.700.

The Bears earned their highest team total of the year and also posted their top 2009 mark in the bars, finishing the event with a 47.950, topping both UC Davis and Seattle Pacific's for the event. Sacramento State had the top team total in each of the four events.

Senior Bridgette Glass won the balance beam with a 9.875. The mark tied for the highest score for an individual in any event of the meet, matching a Sacramento State mark on the vault. It was the top mark for the Bears this season on the event and just the second 9.875 earned by a Cal gymnast this season. Glass also scored a 9.875 earlier this season on a vault. Glass also placed second in the bars, scoring a 9.825 for her routine, matching Glass and the Bears' top score of the season in the event.

Junior Sophia Hocini also earned a second place event finish with a 9.725 vault score ranking as the second highest score of the night among the 24 gymnasts on the vault.

On the floor, sophomore Avery Gee earned the third 9.8+ mark of the meet for the Bears, rating a 9.825 for her routine, finishing third in the event. It was the fourth time this season Gee earned above a 9.8 on a floor routine.

Hocini placed second in the all-around, scoring a 38.900, just shy of her season-high mark.

'I feel like we are peaking at the right time,' said head coach Cari DuBois. 'We continue to improve week to week and things are really starting to come together. I think we might just surprise some people next week at the Pac-10 Championships.'

The Pac-10 Championships will be held next Saturday, March 21, at Maples Pavilion at Stanford. The Championships determine the Bears final rankings in the Conference and are an opportunity for the Bears to qualify for the NCAA Regionals.

This was the second time the Bears competed against Sacramento State and UC Davis this season, this time with the Bears managing to edge past UC Davis for a win.
