Cats Stay Put on Day Two

TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona’s Men’s Golf Team teed off the second round in third place, and finished the day there. The Cats used a 287 (-1) in the first round to get them there, and a 289 (+2) on day two to keep them there.

Oklahoma State used an incredible second round to take a commanding lead heading into the final round. The Cowboys were in sixth place when the round began, eight strokes behind leader Clemson. Oklahoma State carded a 270 (-18) in the second round, putting them at 561 (-15) for the tournament. Their miraculous second round was 13 strokes better than the previous best round of the tournament compiled by Clemson in the first round. A big part of Oklahoma State’s success in round two can be attributed to Morgan Hoffman. Hoffman shot a 62 (-10) to move him from 13th to first individually. His round was five strokes better than the previous best round of the tournament individually.

12 strokes behind Oklahoma State is host UNLV. UNLV, reigning Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship champion, shot par on day two, and held on to second place. Likewise, Arizona kept their third place position with a 289 (+1) in the second round. Arizona is even for the tournament. Day one leader Clemson fell to fourth with a 298 (+10), bringing their cumulative stroke total to 581 (+5). Also staying put was Florida. Florida dropped five strokes today, but their 583 (+7) total was good enough to keep the Gators in fifth and hold off Georgia Tech 584 (+8). Top ranked Georgia climbed the leader boards on day two, finishing seventh, five positions better than their day one finish.

Hoffman leads the field by three strokes. Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech, who was tied for the lead after the first round, is in second at seven under. Top ranked Matthew Giles of USC, also tied for first after the first round, is in third, one stroke behind Tringale. The one stroke separation continued with fellow day-one leaders Ben Martin of Clemson and Colby Smith of UNLV, who are in fourth and fifth respectively.

Tyler Neal fell out of the top five with his 74 (+2) in the second round. However, he did not fall far; he is tied for seventh. Jonathan Khan also shot a 74 (+2) in the second round, dropping him from eighth to 16th. Tarquin MacManus is one stroke behind Khan. The Cats’ two best rounds of the day were shot by Rich Saferian and Brad Nicholson who shot up the scoreboards and are now tied for 24th. Saferian, who was tied for 33rd heading into today, shot a 72 (E), and Nicholson, who was tied for 52nd after the first round, shot a 70 (-2). Playing as an individual, Philip Bagdade is tied for 77th.

The Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship is contested at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev., a par 72, 7,510 yard course. The conclusion of the tournament is scheduled tomorrow, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. PST. Live results are available at
