USC Evens Series With 12-7 Win Over Winthrop
March 14, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Freshman third baseman Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS) went 3-for-4 with his first collegiate home run and a season-high four RBI as the USC Trojans beat the Winthrop Eagles, 12-7, in the second game of a four-game series at Dedeaux Field. USC (5-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with season-highs in runs and hits (15).
Freshman Chad Smith (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win with 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Tyler McBride (0-1) took the loss for Winthrop (11-4) after giving up four runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Eddie Rohan was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI while Eddie Tisdale was 3-for-5 for the Eagles.
USC scored twice in the second. Stock walked to lead off the inning and Hector Rabago doubled. Brandon Garcia walked to load the bases before Ricky Oropesa hit an RBI groundout to first to score the first run. Garret Houts followed with a bunt single to the right side for a 2-0 lead.
Rohan tied it in the fourth with a two-run homer to left center, his third of the season. Oropesa responded in the bottom half of the fourth with a two-run homer to right for a 4-2 USC lead.
Bryn Henderson and Tisdale registered back-to-back singles off Trojan starter Anthony Vasquez in the fifth. Kevin Nolan walked to load the bases and John Murrian brought Henderson home with a sacrifice fly, but that was it as Vasquez induced an inning-ending fly out from Rohan.
Winthrop took the lead in the sixth on RBI singles by Cam Walters and Tisdale for a 5-4 advantage before USC unleashed six runs in the sixth. Rabago walked to lead off and Garcia followed with a single. Oropesa recorded his fourth RBI of the game with an RBI single and Houts advanced the runners with a sacrifice. De Pinto knocked in Garcia with a groundout to short and Vasquez later scored Oropesa with an RBI single before Stock capped the scoring with his third of the year, hitting a three-run shot to right.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start and Monday's series finale will begin at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast by a live video webcast, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
Notes: The six runs in the sixth inning were the most runs in an inning this season for USC...this was the third time this season that the Trojans have recorded two home runs in a game.
