Win Streak at 12 as No. 19 Arizona Tops Iowa, 7-0

TUCSON - No. 19 Arizona beat No. 52 Iowa 7-0 Sunday afternoon to extend its match win streak to 12 and remain undefeated at home.

The Wildcats (14-1) came into its match with a lot of intensity taking two of the three doubles matches and sweeping all six singles matches.

No. 55 doubles team of Francois VanderMerwe and Pat Metham defeated Christian Bierich and Nikita Zotov 8-3 in position #1.

Then, Andres Arango and Andres Carrasco clinched the doubles point by beating Reinoud Haal 8-4 in position #2.

In singles action, the Wildcats dominated every singles match in two sets. Carrasco got off to a fast start defeating Haal 6-1, 6-1 in position #3.

Metham defeated local product Tommy McGeorge 6-3, 6-4 in position #5.

Freshman Jason Zafiros continued his undefeated streak by beating Greg Holm 6-2, 6-2.

Arizona will be in action again in 10 days when they take on the Northwestern Wildcats on March 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. The match will be played at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
