March 17, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- ARIZONA junior catcher Stacie Chambers and WASHINGTON junior pitcher Danielle Lawrie named Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 9-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Chambers, once again, was an offensive force for the Wildcats, racking up 15 RBI and seven runs scored in 14 at-bats. The junior, who garnered six hits over the tournament, all home runs, continues to lead the Conference in home runs with 19 total on the season. Chambers has also totaled a league-leading 66 RBI so far this year.
Against New Mexico, the Glendale, Ariz., native drove in seven runners on two home runs, including her third grand slam of the season. Chambers also homered in her final two at-bats against Penn State and her first two at-bats against Notre Dame, becoming the first player in Arizona program history to hit four home runs in consecutive plate appearances.
This is Chambers’ second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and second of the season for the catcher. Arizona has earned a Conference-leading 124 all-time honors.
Lawrie, a native of Langley, British Columbia, continued to impress in her record setting junior campaign, again finishing the weekend 3-0 against ranked opponents. The current Washington all-time strikeout leader, Lawrie allowed only one run in 27.1 innings, while striking out 47 batters.
Most notably this weekend, Lawrie shut out a 10th-ranked Michigan team who came into the contest averaging 4.6 runs per game. Michigan had only been shut out twice on the season prior to its meeting with Washington. Against the Wolverines, Lawrie struck out 13 batters and allowed one hit, while not walking a single player.
Lawrie is 18-1 on the season with a Conference-low 0.27 ERA. Her 12 shutouts rank second on the UW single-season record list.
This marks Lawrie’s seventh Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and third this season. Lawrie matches Arizona great Jennie Finch with her seventh weekly honor. Washington has earned 63 Player of the Week honors overall.
