March 17, 2009

This Week
California, whose men's team compiled its highest finish ever (12th) in the recent NCAA Indoor Championships, will compete outdoors at the Hornet Invitational in Hornet Stadium on Saturday, March 21, in Sacramento. Cal head coach Tony Sandoval will bring a contingent of vertical and horizontal jumpers, throwers and multi-athletes - including 2008 Croatian Olympian Martin Maric, senior Tifani Grimes and pole vaulter Allison Stokke - to the state capitol. The Bears who traveled to the March 13-14 indoor national meet at Texas A&M will take some time off before their next competition.

That latter group includes sophomore Michael Coe, senior Katie Morgan, senior Jake Hanson, senior Inika McPherson, junior Mark Matusak, junior Kristen Meister, sophomore Cherrelle Garrett and freshman Sebastian Sam. Senior Ed Wright, who tied for third place in the men's high jump in Texas, ended his Cal career at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

A Look Back
At the NCAA Indoor Championships

Michael Coe took second place in the men's 3000-meter run final and teammate Ed Wright wrapped up his college career with a third-place finish in the men's high jump final on March 14 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships that wrapped up at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M. Golden Bears senior Katie Morgan did not post a height in the women's pole vault final on the final day of the two-day national meet.

In the team standings, the Cal men finished 11th with 18.5 points and the Cal women tied for 41st with five points. Oregon won the men's title (54 points) and Tennessee won the women's crown (42).

Wright, whose top mark Saturday was a 7-0.25 (2.14 meters), wrapped up his Cal career with his best finish at either NCAA Track and Field Championships. Kansas State's Scott Sellers won the event with a jump of 7-4.5 (2.25).

Coe, who was second to Oregon's Galen Rupp in the 3000, clocked a time of 7:54.42.

The following Bears earned All-America status at the meet: Coe (men's 3000 and distance medley relay), Wright (men's high jump), Inika McPherson (women's high jump), Mark Matusak (men's distance medley relay), Jake Hanson (men's distance medley relay) and Sebastian Sam (men's distance medley relay). Coe anchored the Cal men's distance medley relay, which included Matusak, Hanson and Sam, that placed third at NCAAs on March 13.
