USC To Hold Annual Trojan Invitational At Loker Stadium On Saturday

LOS ANGELES - The USC Trojans men's and women's track will host the annual Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium on Saturday, March 21 beginning at 9 a.m. The hammer competition will be held on Friday, March 20 at Mt. SAC beginning at 2 p.m. Among the teams competing at the Trojan Invitational will be national power Texas A&M, Washington State, Long Beach State, CSUN, Fresno State and SMU (women). The meet also includes the L.A. City High School Relay Championships.

WIJESEKARA IS AN ALL-AMERICAN NAME - USC's redshirt junior high jumper Manjula Wijesekara earned All-American honors last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Texas A&M. Wijesekara jumped 7-0 1/4 (2.14m) to place seventh. It was tied for the second-highest jump on the day, but he fell to 7th due to misses.

TROJANS SHAKE IT UP AT NORTHRIDGE - USC had a strong showing at the Northridge Invitational on March 13-14 in Northridge, Calif. Individuals winning events at the meet included: Shana Woods in the women's javelin throw B section (130-1), Marissa Minderler in the women's shot put B section (40-8 3/4), Kristine Busa in the women's javelin throw (157-9), Katalin Mate in the women's discus throw A section (159-7), Frida Flodstrom in the women's 800m (2:09.89), Shalina Clarke in the women's 100m HH (13.68) and the women's 4x400m relay team (3:40.37). Men taking home first place included: Trey Henderson in the hammer throw (193-9), Aaron Dan in the discus throw A section (187-9), Derek Scott in the pole vault (17-0 3/4), the 4x800m relay team (7:35.09), Oscar Spurlock in the 110m HH (13.92), the 1600m sprint medley team (3:23.64) and the men's 4x400m relay team (3:14.33).

HE WAS WHITE HOT - Redshirt senior Corey White, a transfer from Redlands, enjoyed a phenomenal first season as a Trojan in 2008, winning the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional titles in the javelin and placing second at the NCAA Championships. His second-place finish in the javelin at the NCAA Championships to Chris Hill of Georgia by two feet was his only loss of the collegiate season. Along the way, White improved at almost every meet, setting and resetting the school record three times with a best throw of 267-10 (81.65m) set at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 20, 2008. During the season, White bettered the USC javelin record, which had stood since 1995, by more than 23 feet. He is expected to make his 2009 season debut this weekend.

MUHAMMAD IN THE BOOKS - Sure freshman Dalilah Muhammad is probably in the school books all the time, but we are referring to the Trojan record books. She ran a season-best 59.44 in the 400m IH at the Northridge Invitational on March 14, tying for the 8th fastest 400m IH race in USC history. The multi-talented athlete won the New York state 400m IH as senior with a meet-record time of 57.81. Muhammad already had qualified for the NCAA West Regional earlier in the season with a time of 1:00.63.

KATALIN WAS RATTLIN' - Senior transfer Katalin Mate (Auburn) also justed entered the USC track and field record books with a discus throw of 159-7 at the Northridge Invitational on March 14. That mark places her eighth all-time by a Trojan female. Mate has a career-best throw of 178-7

NEXT WEEK - The Trojans' track and field team will compete at the Cal-Nevada Championships held in Westwood on March 28-29 and at the Stanford Relays on March 27-28.
