Waldron Dominant as Beavers Shut out Utah Valley
March 19, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tyler Waldron pitched eight shutout innings and Ryan Ortiz tied a season-high with three hits as the Oregon State baseball team won its 2009 home opener in convincing fashion with a 7-0 win over Utah Valley Thursday night at Goss Stadium.
Waldron was sharp from the first pitch as he struck out three of the first five hitters that came to the plate. The Wolverines were not able to muster a hit off of the Beaver hurler until the fourth inning, and only collected three against Waldron in his team-high eight innings of work. His six strikeouts in the game tied a season high, which he last achieved on February 28 against Arizona State.
The win for Waldron improved him to 1-1 this season.
'Tyler pitched a solid game and was very aggressive on the mound,' Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. 'We needed a solid outing from him at the start of the five game homestand.'
Oregon State catcher Ryan Ortiz had arguably his best game at the plate all season, going3-for-3 with one walk in four plate appearances. He was in the middle of every Beaver rally, scoring two runs and driving in three more. His bases-clearing double in the fifth inning broke the game open for Oregon State.
Adalberto Santos extended his hitting streak to nine games in a dramatic way, waiting until his final at-bat in the eighth inning to launch a 2-0 pitch over the left-centerfield wall for a leadoff homerun. He also drove in Ortiz with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score the Beavers' (9-5 overall) first run of the game. Second basemen John Tommasini extended his hit streak to four games with his third multi-hit game of the season.
The Beavers struck first in the fourth inning when Ortiz led off the inning with a single up the middle. A hit-and-run ground out by Brett Casey advanced Ortiz to second, followed by a single through the right side of the infield by Jared Norris that put runners on the corner with one out for Santos, who hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and gave OSU the 1-0 lead.
Oregon State kept up the pressure in the fifth inning. After Joey Wong drove in a run with a one-out double, the Beavers loaded the bases for Ortiz. The OSU catcher proceeded to drive a ball deep into the right-centerfield gap for a run-clearing double that extended the lead to 5-0.
Brock Sargent started for Utah Valley (5-12), going 4 1/3 innings. He was touched for six hits and five runs while striking out six.
