PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Matt Way struck out a career-high 10 and gave up three hits in seven shutout innings to lead Washington State past South Dakota State 12-0 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday.

Way (2-2) fanned at least one hitter in every inning he worked and threw 64 of his 84 pitches for strikes. He extended his streak without giving up an earned run to 23 and one-third innings.

'Anytime you score some runs with Matt Way on the mound you feel good about your chances to win,' Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We were able to extend an early lead and it feels good to get back on the winning side.'

The Cougars (6-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a single by freshman Patrick Claussen, triple by sophomore John Desmarais and ground out by freshman Derek Jones.

In the second, sophomore Shea Vucinich walked, moved to second on a ground out, took third on a bunt and scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars added three more runs in the fourth on a RBI-single by Claussen and a two-run single by senior Greg Lagreid to increase their lead to 60.

In the fifth, junior Michael Weber led off with a double and Vucinich followed with his third home run of the season for an 8-0 advantage. An error allowed another run to score before sophomore Garry Kuykendall singled home a run and freshman Kyle Buchanan recorded a RBI-ground out.

The Cougars capped the scoring in the seventh when Desmarais led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Buchanan.

The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m.

Senior Matt Way's 10 strikeouts were the most by a Cougar pitcher since Connor Lambert had 10 against Air Force, May 2, 2007...freshman Kyle Buchanan collected his first-collegiate hit and first-two RBI as a Cougar...sophomore Garry Kuykendall tallied his first RBI of the season.
