Wildcats shut out Cowgirls
March 20, 2009
The Wildcats (8-5, 1-2 Pac 10) took down the University of Wyoming (5-8, 0-0 MWC) Friday, shutting them out 7-0.
In doubles, the Wildcats changed up the No. 2 position, pairing freshman Natasha Marks with junior Ariane Masschelein, and having the usual No. 2 pair, senior Danielle Steinberg and freshman Sarah Landsman, play in the No. 1 spot.
Steinberg and Landsman defeated Sarah Summerfield and Carly Van Hollen 8-2, while Marks and Masschelein shut out Rebecca Berger and Jamie Nelson 8-0.
'We played a good match today. We did a great job in the doubles, especially using a new combination at the number 2 position,' Said head coach Vicky Maes, 'We came out strong and kept our focus even though the matches were relatively fast.'
In singles all the Wildcats won their first set 6-0. In the No. 1 spot, Steinberg continued to shut out Summerfield, 6-0, 6-0.
Another shut out took place in the No. 2 spot, where Marks defeated Van Hollen 6-0, 6-0.
In the No. 3 spot, Landsman defeated Rebecca Berger 6-0, 6-2, and in the No. 4 spot, Masschelein defeated Carolina Chaix 6-0, 6-1.
Jane Huh shut out Jamie Nelson in the first set, and then battled to win the second set defeating her 6-0, 7-6.
'In singles, we got a solid start too, winning all first sets 6-0. We were happy to finish in straight sets on all courts,' Maes continued, 'Jane got challenged in her second set but that was good practice for her. She hasn't played singles for a few weeks and this way she got to perform under some pressure, helping her get ready for tomorrow's match.'
