The No. 5-ranked California women's tennis team (11-3, 2-0 Pac-10) fell, 4-3, to No. 18 Fresno State (9-4) today at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears won the doubles point for the 10th time this season but were overpowered on the singles courts as No. 19-ranked Melanie Gloria clinched the match for the Bulldogs with a 7-6, 6-3 win over No. 17-ranked freshman Jana Juricova on the top court.

After enduring several rain delays, Cal opened up the match with the first point by coming out on top in two doubles matches. Freshman Stephany Chang and senior Marion Ravelojaona got things started with an 8-3 win over Danon Beatty and Laura Pola at No. 3 doubles. Senior Bojana Bobusic and Juricova sealed the point for the Bears at the top court next as the duo defeated Fresno State's No. 1-ranked tandem of Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova, 8-5. Coming out a long rain layoff, No. 16-ranked Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe claimed an 8-6 win over No. 9-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou and senior Claire Ilcinkas.

Down a point heading into singles matches, Fresno State fought back to knot things up as Pola took out Ravelojaona on court five with a 6-2, 6-4 win. The Bulldogs went ahead by two points as they got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles next. On court two, No. 28 Petukhova held off No. 21 Cossou for the 6-4, 6-4 win while No. 89 Kucerkova claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 38 Ilcinkas one court over.

The Bears were not deterred however as Chang stepped up at No. 6 singles to fight off Beatty's comeback bid with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win. Chang's win was not enough however as Gloria finished up at the top court next to nab Fresno State's fourth point.

No. 22-ranked Bobusic and Rowe went the distance as the pair traded deuce-points much of the way. Bobusic claimed the first set with a 7-4 tiebreaker effort but dropped the second, 6-4. Knotted up at five-all in the third, Bobusic fought to earn the break and went up 6-5 before taking the 7-5 win.

The Bears return to Pac-10 action next weekend as they head to Los Angeles to face USC (Friday, March 27) at 1:30 p.m. at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium and UCLA (Saturday, March 28) at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Please check and for links to live scoring.
