No. 64 Arizona tops Hawaii
March 21, 2009
The Arizona women's tennis team (9-5, 1-2 Pac-10) defeated Hawaii (7-5, 0-0 WAC) 6-1 Saturday in Oahu.
As Friday's doubles position changes proved useful, the rankings switched up once again with senior Danielle Steinberg and freshman Sarah Landsman remaining in the No. 1 position where the defeated Kobuch & Peter 9-8.
'I'm happy with our performance today,' said head coach Vicky Maes. 'We knew Hawaii was going to be a tough team, as they beat Washington State two days ago. We wanted to get the lead with the doubles and I was proud of the way we completed that task by pulling out the easy one at position 3 and then the close matches at positions 1 and 2.'
In singles, the freshman trio of Landsman, Marks & Castany helped the Wildcats out to an early singles lead, effectively clinching the match for Arizona.
In the No. 1 position, senior Danielle Steinberg started out strong against Hawaii's Kobuch, shutting her out in the first set 6-0 and then cruising to a 6-3 second set victory. Also winning in singles was junior Ariane Masschelein who defeated Hawaii's Van den Bergh 7-5, 6-3.
'In singles, we did a good job pressuring them early and closing out matches,' Maes continued. 'Natasha, Sarah, and Debora all did a great job getting us a 4-0 lead. Dani struggled a bit in the second set but pulled through. We needed this convincing win heading into next weekend. Sac State is a very important match for us, especially down the stretch here.'
Up next, the Wildcats return home to take on Sacramento State on Friday, March 27th at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
