UCLA's Ariana Berlin Named Pac-10 Scholar Athlete Of The Year For Gymnastics

Walnut Creek, Calif. - UCLA senior Ariana Berlin has been selected as the 2008-09 Toyo Tires® Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for gymnastics. She is the first Bruin gymnast and the fourth UCLA student-athlete ever to receive this award.

Berlin, who hails from San Diego, Calif., has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.55 in World Arts & Culture (Dance concentration) and is a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and two-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American. In addition, she has twice earned All-Pac-10 honors in the all-around and has hit 96% of her career routines. She has not missed a meet in her career, competing in 54 consecutive meets. This season, Berlin has recorded career-high marks of 9.9 on vault, beam and floor and 39.5 in the all-around and is averaging over 9.85 on vault, bars and floor and over 9.7 as the leadoff on beam. She has captured five individual titles this season, including a team-high three on uneven bars.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-10 institution nominates one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-10 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.

Scholar-Athletes of the Year in each sport will receive a commemorative award. Toyo® will donate $1,000 to the scholarship funds of the institution's athletic department of each winner in recognition of their accomplishments.

Past Pac-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year for UCLA include Lindsey Pluimer (2007-08 women's basketball), Mathieu Dehaine (2007-08 men's tennis) and Riza Zalameda (2007-08 women's tennis).
