Triggs Pitches USC To 5-1 Win Over UCLA

March 22, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Redshirt freshman Andrew Triggs (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) threw seven scoreless innings Sunday as the USC Trojans evened the Pac-10 Conference series with a 5-1 victory against the UCLA Bruins at Dedeaux Field. Triggs, who allowed just three hits and allowed two walks with seven strikeouts, is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.52 ERA (23 2/3 IP, 17 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 16 SO, .202 opponents' batting average).

The top of the Trojans order combined for six of the team's nine hits in the game as Joe De Pinto, Grant Green and Anthony Vasquez had two hits each. Vasquez went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI as USC improved to 8-9 on the season and 1-1 in Pac-10 play.

Triggs held UCLA (6-13, 1-1) hitless through 3 1/3 innings before Casey Haerther singled to center. Rob Rasmussen (1-1) took the loss for the Bruins, allowing three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

Hector Rabago reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a Rasmussen wild pitch. Billy Pinkerton sacrificed Rabago to third before scoring on Ricky Oropesa's RBI ground out to second. USC made it a 3-0 lead in the third when De Pinto and Green reached on back-to-back walks. Vasquez then laced a two-run double to the right field corner for the Trojans.

UCLA put runners at first and second with an out in the fifth, but Triggs induced ground balls from Niko Gallego and Blair Dunlap to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard. The Bruins did it again in the sixth with runners at first and second before Triggs struck out Cody Decker and got Alex Weber-Shapiro to fly out.

De Pinto, Green and Vasquez all singled in the seventh as the Trojans scored two more runs. UCLA got its lone run in the eighth after catcher Robert Stock entered the game as a reliever. Eddie Murray doubled and later scored on Haerther's RBI ground out to third.

The series concludes tomorrow night at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live by video webcast on
