Beavs in 3rd at Duck Invitational
March 23, 2009
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Oregon State women’s golf is in third place after two rounds of play Saturday at the Oregon Duck Invitational. The Beavers are just six shots behind Oregon going into the final day. The best finisher between the two will be awarded one point for the NW Dodge Civil War Series.
“I was pleased with how we played today,” head coach Rise Lakowske said. “We made some good adjustments in the second round, even though weather conditions were worse. I was pleased with how they made adjustments to improve in one of the coldest days we’ve played all year.”
On Monday, teams played two, 18-hole rounds that began with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at Shadow Hills Country Club, a par-72, 5,954 yard course.
Leading the way for the Beavers was senior Martha Burkard shooting a two round total of 6-over-par 151 (78-73), good enough for a tie for sixth heading into the final round. Burkard is just two shots out of the top five.
“Martha was just steady all day long,” Lakowske said. “She had a little trouble in just a couple situations, otherwise just played pretty steady. She didn’t let anything bother her today.”
Sophomore Cara Freeman shot a steady pair of 76’s for a total of 152 and is tied for 11th. Junior Lauren Archer is tied for 13th with a 153 (77-76), freshman Whitney French shot a 154 (77-77) tying her for 17th.
The Beavers shot a two round total of 610 (308-302), six shots back of second place Oregon who fired a two round total of 604 (301-303).
“All the scores we counted were in the 70s today,” Lakowske said. “We need to get them a little lower if we want to make a run on Oregon and San Francisco. We’ve discussed adjusting some things on a couple tricky holes, but we really just need to come out tomorrow and play to the best of our capabilities. If we do that we can fire a pretty good number.”
Leading the tournament is San Francisco shooting a 592 (291-301). Natasha Podmore of San Francisco leads the tournament after shooting a 1-under-par 143 (71-72).
The Beavers resume the final round of play tomorrow morning at 8:30 in a shotgun start. Oregon State trails Oregon 5.5-7.5 in the NW Dodge Civial War Series.
