March 23, 2009
The 31st-ranked UCLA men's golf team continued its run of success Monday defeating eighth-ranked Texas A&M in the first round of the Collegiate Match Play Championship at The Farms in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
The Bruins' second match against No. 11 Indiana was suspended due to darkness with the Hoosiers holding a precarious 3-2-0 lead.
In the early match, the Bruins' Gregor Main, Erik Flores, Philip Francis and Beau Schoolcraft were all winners. Sophomore Connor Driscoll rallied from three down with a birdie on the final hole to record a tie with Texas A&M's Matt Van Zandt.
In the afternoon match, Driscoll posted a 4 & 3 victory over Indiana's Drew Allenspach at the fifth spot, and Schoolcraft dropped a 2 & 1 decision to IU's David Erdy at No. 4. At the No.1 spot, Main was 1-up through 16 holes against Jorge Campillo, the nation's third-ranked player. At the second and third spots, Flores and Francis were trailing their opponents by a point through 16 holes.
The completion of the second round and the final round will continue Tuesday.
