Huskies Lead At Duck Invite
March 23, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. -- Facing tough weather conditions, the Dawgs shot a combined 8-over, 581 to lead the Oregon Duck Invitational by eight strokes on Monday.
The University of Washington men's golf squad shot a tournament low 285 in the first round before falling victim to the weather and shooting a 296 in the second -- which was a theme for most teams on the day.
'The elements were definitely more difficult during the second round. I think a lot of teams scored worse,' said UW coach Matt Thurmond. 'It was cold, windy and rainy already, but the greens got softer and bumpier as the day went on.'
Leading the Huskies was junior Nick Taylor, who shot a 1-under 143 for the day, which was puts him in second place. Leading is Oregon's Jack Dukeminier at 2-under.
'Nick shot very well today. If he would have made a few putts, he could have been up by a few strokes, but he's in a good position,' Thurmond said.
The Huskies have already won a pair of tournaments during the 2008-09 season in the Husky Invitational in September and the Fresno State Lexus Classic earlier this month. Following Taylor in the standings for the Dawgs is junior Darren Wallace at 1-over (145) and tied for sixth place, Tze Huang Choo (147), who is in 14th place, Richard Lee (148) in 19th place and Chris Killmer (151) in 32nd place. Washington also brought three players, who are scored as individuals, in Jen Bracht (155), Ty Chambers (156) and Kevin Spooner (161).
