CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Calvin Haynes hit a high-arcing shot with 6 seconds left in overtime to give Oregon State a 71-70 win over Vermont in Monday's quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational tournament.
Haynes led the Beavers (15-17) with 19 points and Roeland Schaftenaar added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Marqus Blakely had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Catamounts, who finished 24-9. Senior guard Mike Trimboli added 15 to finish his career with 2,008 points.
The Beavers trailed 38-36 at the half and fell behind by as many as seven in the second half. But Ricky Claitt spurred a comeback by making three consecutive three 3-pointers, the last giving Oregon State a 67-65 lead with about a minute left.
Vermont evened the score when Blakely made a lay-in off an alley-oop pass from Trimboli with 34 seconds to go.
The score stayed that way until an overtime in which both teams were ice cold.
Trimboli hit a 3-point shot with 19 seconds left for Vermont's only score of the extra period. It gave the Catamounts a 70-69 lead. Haynes hit the go-ahead shot over Blakely's outstretched arm, and the Beavers watched Vermont's last shot rim out.
Oregon State will host Stanford in the CBI semifinals on Wednesday. The schools have already met three times this season, with the Beavers sweeping the regular season meetings and the Cardinal getting revenge in the Pacific-10 Conference tournament.
UTEP will play at Richmond in the other semifinal.
