WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- WASHINGTON senior Ashley Charters and STANFORD senior Missy Penna were named the Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 16-Mar. 22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Charters became Washington’s all-time steals leader, over the weekend, recording her 116th career steal in the Huskies’ 3-0 sweep on New Mexico.  With four steals against the Lobos, the Beaverton, Ore., native broke the previous record of 113 set by Rosie Leutzinger, 1997-00.  Charters is currently sixth on the all-time Pac-10 career steals list.

The senior batted .727 for the series and was instrumental in the Huskies’ 4-3 victory on Saturday.  Charters’ two-run single in the bottom of the sixth brought Washington back from two down to force extra innings.  Charters leads the Huskies in batting average (.438), runs (34), hits (42), triples (3), walks (18) and stolen bases (20).  This marks the first honor for Charters and the 64th overall for Washington.

Penna earns her third Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor this season as she recorded her 100th career victory last weekend against Princeton.  The Miami, Fla., native has been instrumental in the Cardinal’s 28-game win streak, the longest active winning streak in the nation.  Penna allowed only one run over the weekend and added two more shutouts to her league-leading 43 career shutouts.

The senior struck out 28 batters, earning wins over Princeton, Winthrop, and Pacific.  Penna is now 18-1 on the season with a 0.56 ERA.  This marks the seventh Pac-10 player of the Week honor for Penna and the 42nd overall for the Cardinal.
