Chad Arnold Dominates California in Cougar Baseball Victory
March 28, 2009
BERKELEY, Calif. - Redshirt-sophomore Chad Arnold pitched seven shutout innings and Washington State blanked California 11-0 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Evans Diamond, Saturday.
With the victory, Washington State (10-11, 2-0 Pac-10) has clinched a series against California for the first time since 2004 and for the first time in Berkeley since 2001.
Arnold (2-1) limited California (13-10, 2-3 Pac-10), the conference leader in team batting average, to four hits, walked three and struck out six while equaling the longest outing of his career.
'No question it was the best game Chad Arnold has pitched as a Cougar,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'It was nice to get some offensive going again, but Chad was definitely the story with what he was able to do against the leading offense in the Pac-10.'
Freshman Adam Conley pitched the final two innings to secure Washington State's first shutout of a conference opponent since game two of a doubleheader against Oregon State, March 22, 1998. It was also the first blanking of a conference foe on the road since game one of a twinbill at Portland State, April 6, 1996. Both those games were Pac-10 North Division contests.
The Cougars gave Arnold an early lead with two runs in the first inning. With two outs, freshman Derek Jones walked and senior Alex Burg singled. Senior Greg Lagreid and junior Michael Weber followed with back-to-back RBI-singles.
In the second, senior Jared Prince doubled home a run and Jones launched a three-run home run to put WSU on top 6-0. Prince added a sacrifice fly in the third and picked up a RBI in the fifth when sophomore Garry Kuykendall doubled with one out and came all the way around to score on Prince's ground out.
The Cougars capped the scoring in the seventh inning when Burg knocked home two runs with a two-out single and Jones came home on a balk.
The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
