Green tripled to left center in the Trojan half of the first and scored on Anthony Vasquez's infield single for an early 1-0 lead. McDonald singled with one out in the third, advancing to second after Raoul Torrez walked. Matt Newman then singled home McDonald and Kipnis followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center as the Sun Devils took the lead for good.

Back-to-back doubles by Newman and Kipnis provided two more runs in the fifth as ASU took the 4-1 lead. In the ninth, Kipnis and McDonald hit two-run homers as part of a six-run inning.

Leake retired the side in five of eight innings for the Sun Devils. USC had runners at first and second with one out in the sixth, but Leake got Vasquez to ground out into the 6-4-3 double play.
