No. 8 USC Men Take Down No. 4 Stanford 4-3
March 28, 2009
PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The No. 8 USC men's tennis team pulled off a big road upset on Saturday afternoon in knocking off host No. 4 Stanford in a 4-3 decision in Palo Alto. USC's doubles sweep proved priceless as it added a boost to singles wins from Daniel Nguyen, Jaak Poldma and made Abdullah Magdas' three-set win at No. 3 the match-clinching victory for the Trojans. The Cardinal became the fourth top-10 team taken down by the Trojans this season, as USC improves to 15-4 overall and holds a 2-0 mark in Pac-10 play thanks to today's upset of Stanford.
In the teams' previous meeting this season, Stanford had claimed the doubles point and went on to edge the Trojans 4-3. This time, USC made certain to get that early leg up, as #6 Robert Farah / Steve Johnson pinned up an 8-5 win over Stanford's Bruch/Muller at the No. 1 doubles slot. At No. 3, Matt Kecki / Jaak Poldma secured the point on an 8-5 win over Wire/Kelly, and Abdullah Magdas / Daniel Nguyen wrapped things up by snagging the No. 2 doubles match with an 8-7 (3) win over Thacher/Klahn.
Momentum shifted for a moment as #53 Bradley Klahn topped USC's #92 freshman Steve Johnson 7-6 (6), 6-2 at the No. 2 singles position. The teams would not stay tied up at 1-1 for long, as freshman Daniel Nguyen beat Blake Muller 7-5, 6-2 from his No. 6 slot, and #101 Jaak Poldma took down #13 Alex Clayton at No. 1 with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win that got USC ahead 3-1 in the match. The Cardinal would close back in, however. #113 Richard Wire pulled off a tight second-set tiebreaker to claim a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win at No. 5 over Jason McNaughton to cut the USC lead to 3-2. Next, Matt Bruch pulled off a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over USC freshman Matt Kecki at No. 4, and the teams were locked up 3-3 with a match still battling out on court 3. There, USC's #75 senior Abdullah Magdas gutted out the winning effort for the Trojans. He pushed back against his Stanford opponent Ryan Thacher to notch a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 7-5 win that wrapped up a big win for the Trojans.
Magdas and Nguyen both emerge with a winning weekend for the Trojans, combining forces for two doubles wins and two singles wins apiece.
The Trojans now return home for a stretch of home matches. First up is an exhibition match against the U.S. National Team on Tuesday (March 31). After that, USC continues its Pac-10 calendar, hosting Washington at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (April 3) and then taking on Washington State at 1 p.m. on Saturday (April 4).
