Bruin Men Dominate Cal/Nevada Championships
March 29, 2009
The UCLA men's track and field team emphatically captured the 2009 Cal/Nevada Championship crown on Sunday, running away with the team title by nearly 120 points over the nearest team. The Bruins had five event winners on the final day of competition en route to the victory.
UCLA captured every single field event title contested on Sunday with wins in the pole vault, triple jump, shot put and discus. Sophomore Greg Woepse led the way with a career performance in the vault as UCLA took the top three spots in the event. His vault of 17-4.50 bettered his previous lifetime-best of 17-1 and is the No. 1 mark in the NCAA this season. Fellow sophomores Johnny Quinn and Casey DiCesare both cleared 17-00.75 as Quinn placed second and DiCesare tied for third. Senior Bobby Talley finished seventh with a vault of 16-6.75 as all four men now have their regional qualifying mark in the vault.
Sophomore Jonathan Clark added over two feet to his season-best mark in the triple jump with a winning leap and regional qualifier of 51-3. Today's mark is the No. 2 triple jump in the NCAA this season. Teammate Steven Taylor finished third with a mark of 48-8.
In the shot put, sophomore Nick Robinson opened up his outdoor campaign with a regional mark and winning throw of 57-9.50. That mark ranks amongst the top-10 in the NCAA this season. Freshman Mark Weber was second with a lifetime-best mark of 54-1.25.
Freshman Thomas Nagengast capped off a Bruin sweep of Sunday's field events with a win in the discus as he threw a regional qualifier and lifetime-best of 171-9. Weber finished seventh with a throw of 162-4.
