Men's Golf in 6th after 18 Holes at Western Intercollegiate
March 29, 2009
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Golden Bears sit sixth after day one of the Western Intercollegiate Saturday at Pasatiemo Golf Course, led by a T13-round of 72 (+2) by Eric Mina. Three of California's competitors are within two shots of Mina as the Bears seek to gain further ground over the final two rounds.
Fresno State leads the event after 18 holes at 278 (-2) on the strength of three golfers under par. The Buldogs' Bhavik Patel and Colorado's Pat Grady are tied for the individual lead at 68 (-2).
Eric Mina kicked off his round on the fourth hole and put down four birdies to offset four bogies, but a double-bogey 10th left him at +2 on the day, good for a tie for 13th place. Starting his round on hole five.
Stephen Hale shot five pars and a birdie on his first six holes and finished the round at 73 (+3) and a tie for 24th. John Murphy suffered a double bogey on his second hole (No. 5), but three birdies, including back-to-back birds on 12 and 13, helped to keep him in the hunt at 74 (+4) and a tie for 31st with teammate Michael Jensen.
With the top-four scores counting toward each day's total, Kent Yamane's 80 (+10, T78) does not figure into the Bears' Saturday score.
The Bears, 15 shots off the lead with 36 holes to play, resume play tomorrow with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Live tournament scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
