Women's Track & Field Captures Cal/Nevada Championship Crown

The UCLA women's track and field team ran away with the team crown on Sunday at the Cal/Nevada Championships, winning by nearly double over the nearest team. UCLA athletes posted four event wins on the final day of competition to help the Bruins win the team title.

Women's head coach Jeanette Bolden was named the Coach of the Meet, while junior pole vaulter Katy Viuf was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet after having jumped the No. 2 mark in the world this year in the pole vault on Saturday (14-1.25).

Freshman Ke'Nyia Richardson started the Bruins off with a win in the triple jump as she posted a regional qualifier of 41-00.25. Junior Krishna Curry ran the No. 2 time in the NCAA this season with her winning run of 2:06.68. That time was also a regional qualifier. Junior Rosa Magana placed third (2:12.30), while sophomore Shannon Murakami was eighth (2:16.81) to round out the Bruin scorers in the 800m.

Sophomore Lindsay Rowe eeked out a win by .01 seconds in the 100m hurdles as she ran a regional qualifier of 13.67. That time is one of the top-10 marks in the NCAA this season.

The 4x400m relay team of sophomore Ashlea McLaughlin, senior Krystin Lacy, freshman Camilla Dencer and senior Nicole Leach easily raced to victory with a regional qualifying time of 3:35.89. That mark is the No. 1 relay time in the NCAA this season and was nearly seven seconds faster then the second-place team. Dencer also placed third in the 400m with a lifetime-best and regional qualifying time of 54.27. Her mark is one of the top 400m times in the NCAA this season.

The 4x100m relay team of senior Rhonda Watkins, freshman Yasmin Woodruff, Leach and Lacy ran a regional qualifier of 45.46 to finish second overall. Woodruff also ran a lifetime-best and regional qualifying time of 23.82 in the 200m to finish second overall. Her time ranks amongst the top-10 in the NCAA this season.

Several other Bruins picked up points toward the team title on Sunday. Freshman Nijah Nelms placed eighth in the 100m (12.27).

In the 1500m, senior Ciara Viehweg ran a season-best 4:31.81 to finish second overall, while fellow senior Lauren Jirges finished fifth in a time of 4:38.83. Freshman Brittany Borman threw a season-best 46-1.50 in the shot put to finish fifth overall.
