Cal Sweeps Ohio State on the Final Day of Pac-10 Challenge
March 30, 2009
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - California swept Ohio State in three races on Sunday at the Pac-10 Challenge, winning with its varsity 8, second varsity eight and varsity four boats on the final day of the regatta.
The Golden Bears' fifth-ranked varsity eight showed impressive boat speed in beating the 12th-ranked Buckeyes, 6:39.9- 6:55.0. Cal also topped Ohio State's varsity 8 at last season's Pac-10 Challenge.
'I am really pleased with where we are for this time of year,' Cal head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'The varsity 8 came out today and raced a lot harder than they did yesterday afternoon.'
The second varsity eight posted a time 6:45.0- 6.48,4 with some changes made from Saturday's lineup.
'We raced multiple line-ups in the second varsity 8 and four, and it's good to have some options,' O'Neill said. 'The changes to the second varsity 8 seemed to have a positive effect.'
Also, the varsity four had a good race, defeating Ohio State by more than two seconds, 7:36.1-7:38.3.
The Bears head back to Briones Reservoir to prepare for their next competition, taking on UC Davis on April 11 in West Sacramento, Calif.
'We'll do some great training the next few weeks,' O'Neill said, 'and we're looking to make some big steps forward.'
