Ibekwe Lauded With All-America Honor
March 31, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona sophomore forward Ify Ibekwe was named to the Associated Press All-America honorable mention list, announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Associated Press All-America teams, which were first named starting in 1995, are selected by a 45-member panel that votes each week in the Top 25 poll. The voting was done prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament.
Ibekwe, a 1st-team all-Pac-10 selection and 1st-team all-Pac-10 Defensive Team honoree, led Arizona in scoring, rebounding, steals, blocked shots, free throws, field goals and double-doubles.
She finished the season with 336 rebounds, coming up three shy of the program’s single-season record set in the 2003-04 season by the late Shawntinice Polk. Her 16 double-doubles were also 2nd all-time for a single-season behind the 21 posted by Polk in the 2002-03 campaign.
The seventh Arizona player to be named to an All-America team, Ibekwe led the Pac-10 and finished 6th in the NCAA in rebounds per game at 11.6. She was also 3rd in the Pac-10 in scoring at 15.7 points per game while also ending up 2nd in blocked shots (1.8) and 4th in steals (2.1).
Ibekwe was chosen the Pac-10 Player of the Week on December 15th after leading the Wildcats to wins over San Diego (66-58) and Long Beach State (56-47). In those games, she averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds, giving Arizona its first award of that nature in almost five years.
