Zags Rally In Ninth To Beat UW, 7-4

March 31, 2009

SEATTLE - Gonzaga took advantage of two Husky errors in the ninth inning to score five runs for a 7-4 comeback victory over the Washington baseball team Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.

After giving up a two-run homer to the Zags in the top of the first, Husky pitchers didn't allow another run until the ninth. In the final inning, after one out, the Bulldogs loaded the bases on a walk, a single and throwing error by UW reliever Brian Pearl on what might have been a game-ending double play.

Tyson Van Winkle singled to drive in one, cutting UW's lead to 4-3. Ryan Wiegand followed with a single up the middle that looked to tie the game, but the ball got past UW center fielder Caleb Brown, allowing all three runners to score. A sacrifice fly then scored Wiegand to add the Zags' seventh run.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Huskies got one aboard, but were never able to bring the tying run to the plate.

Gonzaga improved to 18-7 on the season while the Huskies dropped to 10-15.

Pearl (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) in his one inning of work. Gonzaga reliever Tyler Olson (1-0) hled the Huskies to one run on two hits over three innings for the win. Cody Martin pitched the ninth for the save.

Gonzaga grabbed the early lead in the top of the first. After Drew Heid reached on a chopper in front of the plate, Mark Castellitto belted his fifth homer of the season to give the Zags a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the first, Jake Rife reached on an infield single, took second on a balk and scored on a two-out double from Kyle Conley, cutting the lead to 2-1.

In the second, after a walk to Troy Scott, senior catcher Brett Wilcox turned on an inside pitch, hitting it out to right for his first homer of the year, putting the UW in front, 3-2.

Washington didn't add any insurance until the eighth, when a two-out double from second baseman Pierce Rankin drove in the Huskies' fourth run.

The series concludes tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. game. Then, this weekend, No. 3 Arizona State comes to Seattle for a three-game Pac-10 series.
