Briann January to Compete in Women's Three-Point Championship on Thursday
April 2, 2009
Arizona State senior guard Briann January will be one of eight college players from around the country competing in the women's three-point championship as part of the 21st annual College Slam Dunk and Three-Point Championships taking place on Thursday night at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich.
January, who was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday, concluded the regular season second in the country in 3-point field goal percentage (.469). This past season January set the single-season school record with 65 triples. She tied the single-game school record with seven from long range in a win at UC Davis last December. She ended her Sun Devil career ranked fourth on the school's all-time list in 3-point field goal percentage (.399) and fifth in 3-pointers made (132).
The school's all-time leader in assists (538) and free throw percentage (.830), January helped ASU to the most successful four-year period in school history as the Sun Devils won 77 percent of their games (104-132), including 72 percent of their Pac-10 games (59-13), and qualified for the NCAA Tournament all four years, including the program's only appearances in the Elite Eight (2007, '09).
Twice named the Pac-10's Defensive Player of the Year, January finished her career second on the school's all-time list in steals (265). Just as effective on the offensive end of the floor, January was also seventh all-time in scoring with 1,317 points.
Also competing in the three-point championship will be Kristi Toliver (Maryland), Kristi Smith (Iowa), Karee Houlette (Georgetown), Angel Chan (Central Michigan), Heather Ezell (Iowa State), Abby Waner (Duke) and Melissa Liebschwager (Furman).
Thursday's event will air at 6 p.m. PT on ESPN.
