Eight Swimmers Receive Pacific-10 All-Academic Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Pacific-10 Conference Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Wednesday that eight Washington State University swimmers have received Pac-10 All-Academic honors including senior Jamie MacLeod who was the lone Cougar selected for the first team. Sophomores Jennifer Dean and Talor Whitaker as well as senior Kristin Marceau were named to the second team.

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, MacLeod has a 3.60 grade point average and is majoring in microbiology. She received second team all-academic honors in 2007 and 2008. MacLeod contributed to record-breaking performances in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the Pacific-10 Championships this season and is currently in third-place on the Cougar all-time top 10 list in the 50 free with a time of 23.40.

Dean, a native of Campbell, Calif., is a political science major with a 3.40 GPA. She swam four season-best times at the Pacific-10 Championships in March and is now ranked fifth on the Cougar all-time top 10 list in the 200 freestyle (1:50.37).

Marceau, originally from Bend, Ore., has a 3.39 GPA and is majoring in food science and human nutrition. She received all-academic honorable mention accolades in 2008. Marceau swam four season-best times at the Pac-10 Championships this season. She competed in the distance freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley this season.

Whitaker, a native of Chesterton, Ind., is majoring in communication and has a 3.51 GPA. Whitaker set WSU records in the 200 IM and as a member of the 200 freestyle relay this season. She also set meet records at the USA Swimming Southern California Grand Prix as a member of both the 400 and 800 free relay teams.

Four Cougars earned honorable mention accolades including junior Michaela Ahlin (3.17, communication), sophomore Sierra Burton (3.24, biological sciences) and seniors Elyse Peterson (3.25, medical sciences) and Afton Pickett (3.09, biological engineering).

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA, have participated in at least 50 percent of competitions and not be a freshman or a first-year transfer.
