April 2, 2009
PRINCETON, N.J. - Four women's Husky crew members have been invited to attend the United States U23 selection camp to be held this summer, as announced by USRowing Wednesday. Only 29 rowers nationwide were invited to attend camp.
Juniors Alison Browning, Adrienne Martelli and Jennifer Park and freshman coxswain Ariana Tanimoto will compete for a spot on the women's eight or quadruple scull crew that will row in the 2009 FISA Under 23 World Championship July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic. In addition to the eight and the quad, women's pair, four and double sculls will also be selected to compete at the 2009 USRowing Under 23 World Championship Trial scheduled for July 6-10. Winners of those races will earn the right to compete in Racice as well.
Browning, a member of last year's JV eight that won the San Diego Crew Classic, was promoted to the varsity eight for the second half of the season, helping the squad to a second place team finish at the 2008 NCAA Championship. A native of Palos Verdes, Calif., Browning took gold in both the elite and intermediate 2- events at the 2008 US Club National Regatta, along with Martelli. In 2006, Browning won gold in the women's 2x at the Junior National Regatta. Browning also won gold in the women's quad and the women's double at the 2005 CanAmMex Regatta and in the women's eight and the women's double at the 2005 U.S. Rowing Nationals.
Martelli, a native of University Place, Wash. rowed in the 2008 junior varsity eight that won the San Diego Crew Classic before moving up to the varsity boat. As a member of the varsity eight, Martelli helped Washington to wins over Navy and the University of Melbourne in the Windermere Cup and a second place team finish at the 2008 NCAA Championship. Pairing with Browning, Martelli won gold at the 2008 US Club National Regatta in the elite and intermediate 2- events. She also won gold in the women's eight at the 2006 US Jr. National Championship Regatta. Martelli is consistently on the UW quarterly Dean's list and was selected as an honorable mention on the 2008 Pac-10 All-Academic team.
Woodinville, Wash. native Park won Pac-10 and NCAA gold in 2008, rowing with the undefeated National Champion Washington varsity four. Park, who raced in the three seat last year, helped her crew go undefeated in 2008, notching victories over Oregon State, Washington State, California, Virginia, Brown, Michigan State and Yale. Her freshman season, Park was a member of the novice eight that captured wins over Oregon State, Washington State and California in the regular season and won silver at the Pac-10 Championship.
Tanimoto, who hails from Wayland, Mass., started with the novice crew this past fall and is expected to race with the junior varsity this weekend in San Diego. The 5-5 coxswain has four years of experience, coxing the Wayland-Weston crew during high school. Tanimoto was invited to the US Rowing Junior Women's National Team selection camp last season.
Full details of the camp will be released next week on USRowing's official website.
