Cats Trio 1-Over at ASU Invite
April 3, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. - Three members of the Arizona women's golf team shot 1-over 73 on day one of the PING/ASU Invitational, Friday afternoon at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.
The Wildcats sit in 8th place after the first round of play with a team score of 299, but are just six shots off the overall lead. UCLA currently leads the way at 293 with Purdue and the host Sun Devils both one shot off the pace.
Freshman Nikki Koller and junior Brittany Benvenuto are each 1-over after 18 holes while freshman Isabelle Boineau, who entered the tournament as an individual competitor, matched her teammates at 73.
The Wildcats started on hole 10 and were in good shape early on as the team was 1-under after six holes thanks to four birdies, two of which were tallied by Koller. The last three holes of the golf course, however, proved to be a much more daunting task. Arizona was a combined 9-over par on holes 16 through 18 as the team made the turn.
Koller played the final nine holes at even-par 36 while Benvenuto was just 1-over after a bogey on the 8th hole ruined what had been par up to that point. The duo are both tied for 12th place with Boineau and sit three shots off the individual lead. Jodi Ewart of New Mexico and Jennifer Song of USC each shot 70 on Friday.
Sophomore Alejandra Llaneza was unable to card any birdies and shot 76 in her return to the Arizona lineup while senior Amanda Wilson shot 77 on the day. Freshman Margarita Ramos rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats by shooting 83.
The Wildcats play round two on Saturday, April 4 with the opening threesome heading out at 8:00 a.m.
