No. 17 Golden Bears Have Two Golfers in Top Ten after Round 1 of ASU/PING Invite

The No. 17 California Golden Bears' sophomore Pia Halbig and freshman Diane Kwon are in a tie for eighth place after the first round of the ASU/PING Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.

Halbig and Kwon led the Bears with a pair of one-over 73's, just three strokes behind the leaders. Jodi Ewert of New Mexico and USC's Jennifer Strong top the leader board with first-round scores of two-under 70's. Kwon started strong, with three birdies in her first nine holes, to finish in a tie for eighth place. She logged four total birdies for the round. Halbig played a steady, consistent 18, with one birdie and two bogeys to earn her +1.

Senior Allison Goodman shot a +7, junior Roseanne Niven a +11, and sophomore Andrea Waters a +13.

Cal is one of 17 teams competing at the ASU/PING Invitational at the Par 72, 6230 yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe. After the first round, the shorthanded Bears, who are without the services of senior Shannon Yocum, are in 14th place with a +20 (308). The second round of 18 will take place on Saturday with the tournament wrapping up Sunday afternoon.
