April 3, 2009

STANFORD, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Stanford men's golf team will compete in its last regular-season road tournament this weekend, traveling to Alpharetta, Ga. for the 2009 United States Collegiate Championship. The tournament, hosted by Georgia Tech at The Golf Club of Georgia, is a three-day, 54-hole competition held at the club's Lakeside Course that will feature 9 of the nation's top-10 teams.

The quality of the teams in this year's field is outstanding as is the norm, with no team currently ranked lower than No. 31 in Golfweek's collegiate poll. Along with No. 6 Stanford, the field includes No. 1 Georgia, No.2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Southern California, No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 Florida, No. 7 Indiana, No. 8 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Washington, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 13 Alabama, No. 18 Florida State, No. 24 Texas A&M, No. 29 East Tennessee State, No. 27 UCLA, and No. 31 California. 10 of the teams were top-13 finishers at the 2008 NCAA Championships.

Filling out the roster for the Cardinal on this trip will be sophomores Steve Ziegler and Sihwan Kim, freshman David Chung, and seniors Dodge Kemmer and Daniel Lim. Last year, Stanford, in its first year competing in the tournament, took 11th place. The tournament also served as one of Ziegler's breakout performances, as he finished tied for 10th individually with a two-over-par 218. It was his first top-10 finish in collegiate play.

The Cardinal will tee off from 12:20 p.m. - 1 p.m. ET off of the tenth hole and will be paired with Alabama and Washington. On day two, Stanford will begin from 11:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. off of the first tee. Tuesday's final rounds will begin with 11 a.m. tee times.

The USCC has come to be known as the 'Masters of College Golf' and is considered by many to be a preview of the NCAA Championship. The tournament offers PGA Tour-type, championship conditions for the nation's finest college players, including a personal caddie for all three rounds. The 7017-yard Lakeside Course, is one of two Arthur Hills-designed championship courses at The Golf Club of Georgia. It is famous for its accuracy demands on approach shots and its firm, fast greens. It has been the host of the United States Collegiate Championship since the tournament's inception in 2006.

The USCC crowns a team and individual champion, which are honored on the Club's perpetual mahogany, gold and crystal trophy. Team champions have been Clemson (2006), Georgia (2007), and USC (2008). Individual titles have gone to Clemson's Stephen Poole (2006), and Wake Forest's Webb Simpson (2007), and Trent Leon (Oklahoma State).

The tournament has been televised the past three years on Comcast Sports Southeast. It will be broadcast on CSS tape delay on April 21 at 10:30 p.m. ET. The tournament is open to the public but for those who cannot attend, live stats will be available at Golf Stat. For more information on the tournament, please visit
