No. 6 USC Finishes Off the Huskies

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 6 USC tennis team beat the No. 21 Washington Huskies Friday at Marks Stadium with a 4-3 score. The win brings the Trojans to 16-4 overall and the loss drops the Huskies to 12-6 overall.
In doubles the Trojans started off strong, with a commanding 8-0 win by No. 3 Andrew Kells/Matt Kecki over UW's David Chu/Ryo Sekiguchi. From the No. 2 slot, Steve Johnson/Jaak Poldma battled hard against Patrik Fischer/Tobi Obenaus, coming back from a 4-1 deficit to tie it up 5-5. However, that would not be enough, as Fischer/Obenaus took the win 8-6. That left the doubles point in the hands Abdullah Magdas/Daniel Nguyen, who out of the No. 1 slot defeated Derek Drabble/Martin Kildahl 8-4 to secure the doubles point and put USC up, 1-0.
In singles USC was led by #67 Steve Johnson, who posted a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over UW's David Chu from the No. 3 spot. Next to finish for the Trojans was freshman Matt Kecki, who defeated Derek Drabble 6-3, 6-1, to put the Trojans up 3-0. The Huskies mounted a bit of a rally, getting a 6-2, 6-4 victory by Patrik Fischer over USC's Jaak Poldma from the No. 1 slot. Next No. 6 Jason McNaughton lost to Ryo Sekiguchi, 6-3, 6-2, bringing the match score to 3-2, USC. No. 2 Abdullah Magdas came up big for the Trojans, getting a 7-5, 6-4 win over UW's Martin Kildahl to clench the win for USC. Finishing off the match was a close battle out of the No. 5 spot between Daniel Nguyen and Tobi Obenaus. Nguyen won the first set 7-5, but Obenhaus came back to win the second set 6-4 and after a close tiebreaker, Obenhaus took the point for UW with a 11-9 tiebreak score, putting the final match score at 4-3, USC.
The Trojans will have a quick turnaround with a match tomorrow, Saturday (April 4) at 1 p.m. at Marks Stadium against the Oregon Ducks.
