Stanford Takes Third Pac-10 Win In Corvallis

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team (32-2, 3-1 Pac-10) won its third consecutive Pac-10 game today, topping Oregon State, 4-2, at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis, Ore.

The Cardinal outhit the Beavers, 8-4, but left nine runners on base. Freshman Ashley Hansen posted her third multi-hit game of Pac-10 play, while junior Shannon Koplitz went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Senior ace Missy Penna picked up her 22nd win of the year, fanning 13 in seven innings of work. She gave up four hits and allowed two runs, both unearned. Freshman Paige Hall struck out six, gave up four earned runs and took the loss for the Beavers.

Oregon State struck first, using a pair of hits to score the game's first run in the second inning. Audrey Roderfeld led off the game with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a passed ball and score on a single to left center by DeAnn Young.

Stanford answered at its first opportunity, as Hansen and Alissa Haber joined forces to generate a run. Haber was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second and scored on Hansen's second single of the game.

In the fifth inning, Stanford took its first lead. Hansen was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a single by Koplitz.

The Beavers tied the game in the bottom half of the frame. Mary Claire Brenner walked to start the inning was replaced at first by McKenna Lowe. An overthrow on a sacrifice bunt allowed Lowe to take third on the next play, and the sophomore scored on a sacrifice fly by Erin Guzy.

Stanford came up with the winning runs on its last offensive chance, scoring twice in the top of the seventh. Freshman Sarah Hassman started the game off with a single to the left side and Haber reached on an ensuing bunt. A fielder's choice off the bat of Hansen loaded the bases and Koplitz took Hall's first pitch into left field to drive in the winning run. Senior Maddy Coon singled down the left line on the next at bat to give Stanford its two-run cushion.

Stanford continues its weekend against the Oregon Ducks tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
