SALEM, Ore. Senior Sylvia Veal, running unattached, won the 1,500-meters in a 14 runner field on Friday night at the Willamette Invitational at Charles Bowles Track.

Veal (Aloha, Ore.) who has been battling injury this season at Oregon State won the race with a time of 4:33.21.

“I was very pleased with how competitive Sylvia ran today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “She followed her race strategy to a tee.”

Also in action was future Oregon State Beaver Laura Carlyle, a transfer from Whatcom Community College (Washington). Carlyle finished fifth in the 5,000-meters running a time of 17:04, a personal best by more than 25 seconds.

“It was great to see Laura run such a big PR today,” Sullivan said. “We are very excited for her and are looking forward to her competing for us next year.”

Carlyle, who was running unattached, signed her letter of intent to join the Beavers in February.

Oregon State track is back in action next Saturday, Apr. 11, in Davis, Calif. for the Woody Wilson Open.
