Two Men's Crews Advance to Grand Finals at Crew Classic

April 4, 2009

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -

The Oregon State men's rowing team placed two boats in their respective Grand Finals during heat racing on Mission Bay in day one of the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday.

The Oregon State Freshman 8+ put together a strong race in the `B' heat of the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup. After California used a quick start to pull away from the pack, the Beavers gained an edge over the rest of the crews and had a solid hold on second place after the first 1000 meters. UC Santa Barbra challenged the Beavers for second place, but OSU fended them off and finished with a comfortable margin of 9.76 seconds.

As with the F8+, Oregon State's Open 8+ saw California jump out with a strong start and pull away from the rest of the field. The Beavers raced bow-to-bow with Orange Coast College through the first 500 meters before Oregon State began to establish a lead. By the 1000 meter mark, the Beavers had a boat-length advantage which they extended over the second half of the course to take second place and advance to the Grand Finals.

In the `A' heat of the Varsity 8+ competition, No. 7 Harvard took the early lead with the help of a strong start. Their stay in front was short lived however, as No. 1 Washington, No. 4 Brown, and No. 13 Syracuse quickly closed the gap, leaving No. 15 Oregon State and Purdue fighting for fifth place. As the race developed the Huskies continued to pull away, while the Beavers secured fifth place and a spot in the Petite Finals on Sunday.

All three crews will be in action on Sunday. The V8+ will begin the day at 9 a.m. when they take on No. 10 Yale, Syracuse, Michigan, and Purdue in the Petite Finals of the Copley Cup. The Oregon State F8+ will race at 11:10 a.m. for a chance at the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup. Their competition will include crews from Stanford, California, and Washington. The Open 8+ will finish off the Beavers schedule in San Diego when they race at 11:30 a.m. in the Grand Finals for the Joan Ward Memorial Trophy.
