Junior linebacker Malcolm Smith returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown to highlight the USC football team's first intrasquad scrimmage of 2009 spring practice on Sunday (April 5) at USC.

The Trojans also got touchdowns from junior wide receiver David Ausberry, who caught a 6-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Garrett Green, and redshirt freshman tailback Curtis McNeal, who ran 18 yards for a TD. Junior placekicker Joe Houston kicked a 33-yard field goal.

Sophomore quarterback Aaron Corp took the scrimmage's first snaps and completed 8-of-13 passes on the day for 70 yards. He was followed by junior quarterback Mitch Mustain, who was 3-of-8 for 22 yards. Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley, who enrolled at USC this spring after graduating a semester early from high school, hit 6-of-12 passes for 57 yards and guided the Trojans on the McNeal and Houston scoring drives, but he also had a 2-yard pass into the end zone intercepted by senior cornerback Kevin Thomas and run back 56 yards. Green was 1-of-2 with the 6-yard scoring pass in limited duty.

McNeal finished with 48 yards on 5 carries, while senior tailback Stafon Johnson added 41yards on 7 rushes, junior fullback Stanley Havili had 26 yards on 3 carries and sophomore tailback Marc Tyler had 20 yards on 6 tries. Ausberry had 3 receptions for 31 yards, while redshirt freshman wide receiver Brice Butler (29 yards), sophomore tight end Rhett Ellison (22 yards) and junior wide receiver Travon Patterson (19 yards) each added 2 catches.

Thomas and soph safety Shane Horton each had 5 tackles to lead a defense that came up with 3 turnovers.

'Our defense is playing at a really high level,' said ninth-year USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'I'm really encouraged. But the defense should be ahead of the offense at this point, so I'm not surprised. The defense has come out attacking the football.

'All of the quarterbacks did well in the scrimmage. They handled themselves well. We had a couple of dropped balls. I'd only take one play back, the pick in the end zone.'

Seven-time defending Pac-10 champion USC opens its 2009 season on Sept. 5 when it hosts San Jose State. Troy will hold its annual 'Trojan Huddle' public spring game at the Coliseum on April 25 at 1 p.m., with tickets available for $10 at the gate, online at or by calling the USC Ticket Office at (213) 740-4672.
