TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona baseball team dropped the series finale to Southern California, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Kindall Field.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play, and took a 3-2 lead in the second inning. But Trojans’ starter Robert Stock settled in and shutout the Wildcats over the final seven innings, tossing a complete game to earn his second victory of the season.

After nearly overcoming a 10-0 first-inning deficit on Saturday, Arizona asserted itself early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Brad Glenn was hit by a pitch and Dillon Baird drew a walk with no outs to set the table for Shaun Cooper. The freshman designated hitter laced a double to left center field to drive in the game’s first two runs.

A pair of USC runs in the second inning tied the game, but the Wildcats answered with a third run as Rafael Valenzuela scored on a Dwight Childs single in the home half of the second.

Arizona (13-14, 2-7 Pac-10) held its 3-2 lead into the fourth inning, but the Trojans’ offense exploded for five runs off UA starter Donn Roach, who suffered his third loss of the season while allowing seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

With the Trojans (13-14, 4-5 Pac-10) comfortably on top 7-3, both pitching staffs settled down and the game was scoreless over the final five innings.

Arizona relievers Daniel Workman, Cory Burns and Jason Stoffel pitched the final 5 1/3 innings to keep the Wildcats within the four-run margin. But the Arizona bats never mounted a series comeback attempt as Stock limited the Wildcats to only two hits in the final four frames.

A crowd of 1,316 fans were in attendance for the annual “Bark in the Park” promotion, which allows fans to bring their dog to the game.

The Wildcats will continue their homestand this week with a three game series against Oregon State. Because of Easter Sunday, the games will be played Thursday-Friday-Saturday. The first game is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 at Jerry Kindall Field.
