April 6, 2009
STANFORD, Calif.- Sophomore Hilary Barte has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for Mar. 30-Apr. 5, collecting her third career honor following three impressive performances last week.
Barte defeated three nationally-ranked opponents last week as Stanford swept No. 50 Sacramento State (6-1), No. 59 Arizona (7-0) and No. 21 Arizona State (6-1). She took out No. 110 Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State 6-1, 6-1, defeated No. 94 Danielle Steinberg of Arizona 6-4, 6-3 and cruised past No. 3 Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State 6-3, 6-3.
The Chatsworth, Calif., native improved her record to 26-4 overall, 18-1 in duals and 18-4 against nationally-ranked players. Ranked No. 11 in the country, Barte has played all of her dual matches at the No. 1 position in the lineup.
She was equally outstanding in doubles, teaming with Lindsay Burdette to win all thee matches at the No. 1 spot, including an 8-2 triumph over Arizona State's McKenna and Micaela Hein. The team of Barte and Burdette is ranked No. 11 in the nation.
Meanwhile, the threat of heavy rain has resulted in the cancellation of tomorrow's match against Fresno State. The contest is not likely to be made up, as both teams were unable to find an open date in their remaining schedules. This marks the third straight year that Stanford and Fresno State have been forced to cancel their scheduled match due to rain.
However, Stanford is still home for a pair of matches this week, hosting Oregon (Friday, Apr. 10- 1:30 p.m.) in a Pac-10 counting match and Pepperdine (Saturday, Apr. 11- 12 p.m.) on Senior Day.
Stanford extended its improbable home winning streak at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium to an unthinkable 147 in a row (119 in the regular season) following a 6-1 win over Arizona State last weekend. The Cardinal's last loss in a home dual match occurred more than 10 years ago, in the form of a 5-4 setback to No. 4 California on Feb. 27, 1999.
