PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and posted a 12-8 come-from-behind victory over BYU in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Monday.

With one out in the inning, sophomore Matt Argyropoulos blasted a home run over the left field wall to pull Washington State (13-13) within 5-4. After a ground out, freshman pinch hitter Patrick Claussen and sophomore Shea Vucinich singled and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After freshman Derek Jones walked to load the bases, seniors Alex Burg and Greg Lagreid collected back-to-back infield hits to give WSU a 6-5 lead.

Senior Jared Prince and junior Michael Weber followed with consecutive two-run singles that expanded the WSU lead to 10-5. Argyropoulos capped the rally with a double into the right-center field gap that scored Weber.

'It was the type of game where it was going to take a big inning to win it and fortunately we put up an eight spot in the sixth inning,' WSU Associate Head Coach Travis Jewett. 'Our bullpen did a good job of keeping us in the game and allowed our offense an opportunity to come back.'

Four WSU relievers combined to give up two earned runs in four and two-thirds innings. Sophomore James Wise (1-0) worked an inning to earn the victory.

WSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on freshman Derek Jones's home run with a man aboard. After BYU (18-11) battled back to tie the game 2-2, WSU tallied a run in the fourth on a RBI-single by Bartlett. BYU answered with three in the fifth inning before WSU's rally in the sixth.

The teams conclude their two-game series, Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Freshman Derek Jones homered in the first inning for his eighth dinger of the season; fifth-best by a freshman in WSU history...sophomore James Wise picked up the first victory of his career...junior Connor Lambert pitched the final two innings in his 2009 debut.
