Golfer Maria Jose Uribe to Leave UCLA Following Spring Quarter

April 8, 2009

All-America golfer Maria Jose Uribe has stated her intention to leave UCLA following the Spring Quarter, Head Coach Carrie Forsyth announced this week.

'After meeting with me last week and after informing the team, Maria has expressed her desire at this time to return to Colombia to be closer to her family while pursuing her professional career,' said Forsyth. 'While we will be sad to see her leave, we admire her devotion to her loved ones and her determination to move forward towards her career in golf with a solid personal foundation.

'Maria left home at the age of 14,' said Forsyth. 'She feels the need to reestablish her familial relationships before entering the next phase of her life. It is a decision we all respect.'

At the age of 17, Uribe defeated Amanda Blumenherst, the reigning college player of the year, in a 36-hole final to win the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Course. A few weeks later she enrolled at UCLA and quickly made her mark on the Bruins' team. In November of that year, she shared medalist honors with teammate Tiffany Joh at the Kent Youel Invitational. In May of 2008, she was co-medalist at the NCAA West Regional, firing a first round 65 (-7) en route to a 54-hole total of 208 (-8). She earned consensus first-team All-America honors as a freshman last season, and played as an amateur in all four professional majors. She made the cut in three of those major championships, tying for 10th at the 2008 U.S. Women's Open.

As a sophomore this season, Uribe has finished among the Top 30 individuals in all eight starts and is averaging 73.5 with five rounds under par in 23 rounds. Last month, she made the cut as an amateur at the LPGA's MasterCard Classic in Huixquilucan, Mexico, tying for 50th place.

Uribe will leave the University in June in excellent academic standing. She has earned a spot on the Director's Honor Roll every quarter since her enrollment and boasts a cumulative grade point average of 3.37.
