Cal Falls at Stanford, 4-1
April 9, 2009
STANFORD - The No. 16 Cal softball team fell to the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 4-1 on a chilly Thursday night at Smith Family Stadium. The game was televised live by CBS College Sports TV.
The Bears return home to Strawberry Canyon to face the Cardinal on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
Both Marissa Drewrey and Stanford's Missy Penna were locked in a pitcher's duel in the first 3 1/2 innings, before Rosey Neill planted an RBI double to right-center field off of Drewrey in the bottom of the fourth to score Ashley Hansen, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead.
The Bears came right back in the top of the fifth and tied the game at 1-1 thanks to two Stanford fielding errors. Jamia Reid reached base after first baseman Melisa Koutz mishandled the throw from Penna. Reid then moved to second after a sacrifice bunt by her twin sister Elia. Taylor Kelly then popped up in foul territory to Koutz, who then threw to third when she saw Jamia running on the out. But the throw sailed the third baseman's head and Reid turned the corner to score.
Stanford answered in the bottom of the fifth as Hansen tagged a double to center field with the bases loaded and no outs to plate three runs, giving the Cardinal a 4-1 edge.
Cal had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth, but Penna recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the scoring threat.
